I am a animal rescuer. 99.9% of all funds come out of my pocket only. I have a hard time saying no.. So when I am approached about several dogs being put down at Lewis County Humane Society, I was not only appalled but truly shocked. A no kill shelter now threatening to kill several animals?? I heard of how there were going to be staff changes there and the animals were doomed. So of course I offered my help. The woman who contacted me about this was so upset over what she was told that with that we teamed up. We were going to save as many as we could. She was going to pay for them and I was going to house and hopefully adopt them out. It was as we were told the UTMOST urgency as September 1st was their dooms day. Well after several calls, several things being verified and looking at the dogs that came in, doing this for as many years as I have some red flags started going up. The dogs were very thin, nails not done, coats dingy, dirty and a couple still haven't shed their coat from last winter..I was a little unnerved. This is a shelter that is supposed to keep up on the care of the animals? Well I will say that I was told all dogs coming here were healthy, FULLY vaccinated, de-flead, de wormed and the only issue was with one that had food aggression.. NO BIG DEAL.. Now I find out after sending 2 dogs back, The pit I took in against my better wishes was HIGHLY aggressive and after a dog fight, and a lung at my horses that was it. Then I have a dog with horrible diarrhea, he was the second one that went back as im thinking possible the worst. Then I find out 4 more dogs from other area's went in too for the same thing.. They had a parasite infection.. And to top it all off, I am informed that there is no record what so ever of any vaccinations except rabies that was given to these dogs..Now I have put my entire rescue at risk.. This is unacceptable.. I do NOT care about the politics of why the director was terminated, what I do care about is the several animals that have died there, the condition of the shelter a few weeks ago, and the blatant lies told to a woman who only had the animals welfare at heart, and I being a private rescue, doing what I am meant to do, save lives. I cannot afford the medications needed to give to all 6 dogs that came in and possibly all of the ones that were already here. I can NOT afford vaccinating all 6 dogs that came in here, I can NOT afford feeding so many dogs that really did NOT have a death sentence.. Had they stayed there though in the care they had been giving that would have been the death sentence. I am truly sickened by the conditions of these dogs and the several others that were shipped all over this state. Almost all are being sent back to the NEW Lewis County Humane Society under much needed new management and lots of cleaning and redoing of the shelter. Everyone is aware of the lies and slander being told and as stressed out and financially strapped most rescues are there is no reason they can't go back to the county they belong in. I will be keeping the dogs up until then hopefully finding them the loving families they need. Where grass in not a rarity but a necessity and they will not be caged up 24/7. Have you ever seen a dog tip toe touching grass?? Like it has never touched it before?? Sores on legs from laying on cement?? Dogs scarf down food and water so quick they vomit it back out and are willing to eat it again just cause they are so hungry? Dogs so depressed they wouldn't even look at you? One dog when walked that just keeps looking down the road like he is waiting for his owner to come get him. As I stated in my link to "A dogs story" I only believe half of what I am told. I let the dog tell me the other half which would be the truth, and these dogs have lived a hell of a life. And I don't mean a good one either.. I am here to state that the NEW Lewis County Human Society will be finally a wonderful stop off for animals in need or seized. Please show your support for the new management team going in after the first and let them prove to all of us that this will once again be a safe haven for the animals where vet care will be available and all the NORMAL steps and care of the animals will be met, this includes spaying or neutering and all vaccinations. Rescues have no time for games or do we want to care for sick animals that come from a place where there is NO EXCUSE for them to come out in this kind of condition.. I am thoroughly ticked off over this whole thing and even more Pissed at the fact that my ENTIRE farm and reputation were put on the line for one persons retaliation against a entire board of people who voted him out. It was time for change for the sake of all the animals there. And I have been guaranteed the animals will have the best of care and many changes have been made to assure this. |
